More records highs

By by Ken Stanford
UNDATED - Triple-digit temperatures returned to northeast Georgia Wednesday, including Gainesville, where the high of 100 tied a record that was set in 1983.

It was the eighth time this month that a record high has been set or tied in Gainesville - and fifth 100-degree reading of the summer, all since August 9.

Dahlonega also broke a record that had stood since 1983. It was 103 there Wednesday; the old record was 100. It was also 100 in Jefferson.

The National Weather Service says Atlanta also broke a previous record for August 22 with a high of 104 degrees. Meteorologist Frank Taylor says the previous record was 100 and was set in 1983.

Taylor says Atlanta has recorded nine days this August when temperatures have reached 100 degrees or more. That ties the record of nine days of 100-degree temperatures in a year in Georgia set in 1980.

Atlanta was not the hottest spot around yesterday. The Weather Service says Athens recorded 106 degrees, Rome reported 105 degrees and Augusta, 103 degrees. Wednesday was the 22nd straight day of 90+ temperatures in Gainesville and there's been no rain recorded at the airport since August 5.

So far, four people have died in Georgia this year because of the heat wave.

Taylor says more near record heat is expected Thursday with highs staying in the 90s at least through Saturday. He says temperatures may become more seasonal and settle into the mid-90s after the weekend.
