Forsyth schools recognized for work with special needs students

CUMMING - For the third year in a row, the Forsyth County School System (FCS) has been recognized as the leader in the state in improving the performance of students with disabilities.

The Pacesetter Award from the Georgia Department of Education's Division for Special Education Services and Student Supports was presented recently by the Georgia Council for Administrators of Special Education.

Based on data from the 2006-2007 school year, the FCS Special Education Department was recognized for exhibiting the highest performance in the areas of:

*Transitioning students to their desired post-secondary outcomes

*Increasing the percentage of students who meet or exceed state achievement standards for Mathematics and for Reading/English Language Arts

The department was was also recognized for meeting state targets in the following areas:

*Students who meet or exceed state achievement standards for Reading/English Language Arts and for Mathematics

*Graduates with regular education diplomas

*Educating students and young children in the least restrictive environment
