Dentist murder trial opens as potential jurors ask to be excused

By Associated Press
LAWRENCEVILLE - Attorneys in the case of Buford dentist Barton Corbin are meeting today to discuss about 40 potential jurors who have asked to be excused from the trial.

Corbin is accused in the death of his 33-year-old estranged wife Jennifer Corbin, who was found shot in the head in her bedroom in December 2004 by her seven-year-old son.

Gwinnett County prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty in the case because it does not meet the criteria.

However, if Corbin is convicted in Gwinnett County, he could face the death penalty in Richmond County, where where he is accused of killing his dental school girlfriend, Dolly Hearn. The 27-year-old Augusta woman was found shot once in the head in her apartment in 1990.

Hearn and Jennifer Corbin's deaths both were ruled suicides, but authorities later reversed their findings and charged Barton Corbin in both women's deaths.

The trial is expected to last five weeks and include dozens of witnesses.
