Chestatee gets first-ever road win

ELLIJAY - Lane Vasser rushed for 175 yards and two touchdowns and the defense made four separate fourth down stops as Chestatee beat Gilmer 14-10 Friday night in a big Region 7-AAA game for both teams. It was the first-ever road win for the War Eagles (1-2, 1-1 in region) who trailed 10-7 midway through the fourth quarter. Vasser scored on runs of 15 and 16, the last one coming with just over seven minutes left to give Chestatee the lead. "It was a total team effort," Chestatee coach Matt Fligg said. "Gilmer is a tough place to play and somehow we were able to come out with a win. It was huge considering how our last game ended." Chestatee let a 15-point fourth quarter lead slip away against Pickens two weeks ago before losing 37-31 in double overtime. Chestatee overcame several penalties that stalled drives deep in Gilmer territory and two turnovers. But the defense came up huge several times stopping four Gilmer drives inside Chestatee territory. The final defensive stop came with just over a minute left at the War Eagles 20 and then they ran out the clock. "Our defense just came up huge all night. I couldn't be more proud of a group of kids than I am right now," Fligg said. Fligg said Steven Cagle, Derrick cain, Drew Delana and Bobby Anderson lead an aggressive group. But, the War Eagles may have lost Chad Sage again, this time with a shoulder injury. It happened on defense, Fligg said, and they will have it x-rayed next week.
