FLOWERY BRANCH - A group of South Hall homeowners met again Monday night to continue plotting their opposition to a subdivision planned on Light's Ferry Road, which is expected to be considered by the county commission later this week.
At a county planning commission meeting about a month ago, Gilleland-Merritt, LLC. requested 171 lots on 115 acres on Lights Ferry Road south of Conner Road, raising a chorus of protest from homeowners, including retired baseball great Phil Niekro, who claimed the development would pollute Lake Lanier, cause massive traffic problems and overcrowd schools.
As a denial vote began to shape up, the compromising began.
Attorney Tom Jarrard, representing Gilleland-Merritt, proposed 150 lots with 2000 sq. ft. homes and a two-acre amenity area.
The Commission vote July 17 was 4-1, with Chairman Patrick Barry opposed.
South Hall Home Owners Association president Brett Barwick said he wants more compromise before the request goes before the Hall County Commission.
"I'd like to make sure where the buffers are going to be for certain and I'd to visit a second entrance exit," Barwick said.
Gilleland-Merritt said it won't build without Flowery Branch sewer service and that commitment is not secure.
County commissioner Deborah Lynn, who represents the area in question, was at Monday night's meeting. The matter is expected to go before the county commission Thursday.
