GAINESVILLE - A memorial service will be held Tuesday for retired, longtime Gainesville banker and civic leader Richard Shockley, who died Saturday.

Shockley, 80, died at his home following an extended illness. Shockley was a longtime executive with First National Bank of Gainesville, the predecessor to Regions Bank. He served for 41 years at the bank, retiring in 1995, after being President and Chairman of the bank and President and Vice-Chairman of the bank's holding company, First National Bancorp.

In 1977, Shockley was named the Gainesville Rotary Club's "Man of the Year," and in 1979 he was awarded the Silver Beaver for his longtime contributions to the Boys Scouts of America. He served on many statewide organizations, including the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Industrial Relations Council and twice was Co-chairman of the annual Tech-Georgia Fund.

Memorial services are scheduled for 3:00 Tuesday at Grace Episcopal Church. (A complete obituary can be found elsewhere on this site.)
