Braves' Rafael Furcal posts bond on D-U-I and probation violation charges

ATLANTA - Atlanta Braves shortstop Rafael Furcal posted five-thousand dollars bond Friday afternoon for his release from a county jail after he was arrested early this morning on charges of driving under the influence, his second drunk driving charge in four years.

Authorities charged Furcal with D-U-I, speeding and reckless driving and booked him into the Atlanta city jail after he was arrested on Interstate 85.

He had also convicted after a June 2000 arrest for a Cobb County driving under the influence incident.

Furcal paid the 32-hundred dollars bond in cash earlier today and then was transferred to the Cobb County jail after authorities there said he had violated the conditions of his probation.

He will not play in tonight's game against the Montreal Expos.

Furcal was the 2000 National League Rookie of the Year and is batting .287 this season. The Dominican Republic native had two hits and two stolen bases in the Braves' 9-4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies last night.
