New home construction in Gainesville still on a roll

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - May was another month of double-digit numbers for new single-family housing permits in Gainesville - the fourth this year.

Those permits were okayed at a time when mortgage rates were still at or near record-low levels.

There were only five double-digit months for new home permits in all of last year in the city.

Gainesville-Hall County Building Inspection Services says 27 permits for new homes in the city were approved in May for construction expected to cost three million dollars. Last month, there were 24. (More than 120 were approved in unincorporated Hall County, where most of the residential construction takes place.)

The total for the year is 115; for the first five months of 2003, there were 63.

Also last month, in the city, permits were okayed for $768,000 in new multi-family housing.

HALL COUNTY

In unincoporated Hall County, 124 permits were approved for new, single-family housing, expected to cost $21.2 million.
