Glanville interested in NMSU football coaching job

<p>A former National Football League coach says he is interested in becoming head football coach at New Mexico State University.</p><p>Jerry Glanville, of Cumming, Ga., said his first goal would be "not to be on anybody's schedule as homecoming opponent."</p><p>Glanville, head coach of the Houston Oilers from 1985 to 1989 and of the Atlanta Falcons from 1990 to 1993, said via telephone from his home in Georgia that he could assemble a staff in a few days.</p><p>Brian Faison, NMSU athletic director, declined comment on the viability of Glanville as a candidate for the job.</p><p>"He's certainly a legend in the coaching profession," Faison said. "I haven't had the opportunity to get to know him. But I know he's great with the public and he's done great things."</p><p>Tony Samuel, who led NMSU to two winning seasons in eight years, was fired Nov. 24 as the Aggies' head coach. Samuel compiled a 34-57 record during his tenure, and guided the Aggies to a 5-6 mark last season.</p><p>NMSU has had only four winning seasons in the past 35 years.</p><p>Glanville, who sent Faison his resume early this month, said he loves the Las Cruces area and believes it has the potential to be home to a great southwest football program.</p><p>"I see no reason why it can't work there," he said, pointing out that NMSU recruits in the same area as UTEP, which finished the season ranked 24th.</p><p>As for whether a 10-year break from coaching could pose a problem for Glanville, he had a quick response.</p><p>"If you're a preacher, you're always going to be a preacher," he said. "I was born a football coach and I'll always be one. It's time to get back into it."</p>
