ATLANTA - The Public Service Commission named Scana Energy Tuesday as the state's regulated gas marketer.
Scana will assume responsibility for serving low-income residents and people who have been denied service because of past debt problems.

Scana will receive $275,000 to publicize a program which is expected to apply to as many as 300,000 Georgians.

Based on PSC calculations from the 33-cent per therm gas price, the PSC estimates that low-income residents will pay about $40.90 per month, including a $4.95 service fee.

People with bad debt would pay $52.36 per month, which includes an $11.95 monthly service fee.

Two other marketers -- Georgia Natural Gas and Infinite Energy -- bid for the program. The Legislature ordered the PSC to select a regulated marketer for low-income and customers in debt.
Commission Chairman David Burgess says he's hopeful that gas bills will fall for all consumers since many of the delinquent accounts will be removed from the deregulated system.
The PSC said Scana had the best proposal for the three.
