PLANO, TEXAS - Computer-services company Electronic Data Systems Corp. said it has successfully tested a new communications network for the Navy and Marine Corps, leading the Pentagon to approve expansion of the system.

The Defense Department approved connecting 100,000 more terminals to the network, bringing the system to 160,000 of the 360,000 planned computer stations.

EDS was awarded a contract in 2000 to build the network, which it valued at $6.9 billion.

The network is designed to handle transmission of voice, video and data information for Navy civilians, sailors and Marines and improve service at 300 bases around the world. It would eliminate a hodgepodge of different networks at Navy and Marine installations.
In trading Friday, EDS shares fell 33 cents to $54.50.
