Longtime Waycross newspaper editor dies

WAYCROSS - Dorothy Smith, an editor at the Waycross Journal-Herald for more than 40 years, died Thursday after several years of declining health. She was 85. <br> <br> Smith worked at the Journal-Herald from February 1944 until her retirement in September 1985. <br> <br> Born April 18, 1916, in Waycross, Smith graduated from Waycross High School in 1933 and earned a bachelor&#39;s degree in 1939 from Georgia State College for Women at Milledgeville, now known as Georgia College And State University. <br> <br> After teaching high school for three years and doing a two-year stint as a secretary with the U.S. Corps of Engineers in Nashville, Tennessee, Smith took up journalism. <br> <br> Services are planned for 3 p.m. Friday in the chapel at Miles-Odum Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
