BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Dean Foods Co. said it would quit using the Barber Dairies name for ice cream, replacing the brand with a sister line, Mayfield Dairy Farms.
Mayfield President Scottie Mayfield said consumers respond better to the Mayfield brand name. "We don't know why, but Mayfield (products) seem to be more popular than Barber's," he said.
The Birmingham-based Barber Dairies and Mayfield of Athens, Tenn., are divisions of Dean Foods, which merged last year with Suiza Foods Corp. and is based in Texas.
The change was announced Monday.
The decision to let the Barber brand melt away came after a two-year alliance between Barber and Mayfield, during which a limited amount of Mayfield ice cream was distributed by Barber in Alabama.
Mayfield and Barber executive Johnny Collins said there were no plans to eliminate the Barber brand of milk or other dairy products.
Barber Dairies was founded in 1921.
