AirTran breaks ground on new hangar at Atlanta airport

ATLANTA - AirTran Airways is building a new $14.5 million hangar at Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport. <br> <br> The discount airline is based in Orlando, Florida, but Atlanta serves as its hub. Officials say the move will mean about 100 new jobs. <br> <br> The roughly 57,000-square-foot hangar will be built on the northwest corner of the airport. It will be connected to a 20,000-square-foot, two-story office building, which will house engineers and other support staff. A groundbreaking ceremony was held today <br> <br> Construction is expected to be completed by December 2003. The airline estimates 220 employees will be based at the hangar, 100 of them in new jobs. <br> <br> AirTran Airways is the country&#39;s second-largest low-fare airline. It employs 5,400 crew members and serves 404 flights a day to 40 destinations. <br> <br> In September 1997, Atlanta-based ValuJet merged with AirTran Airways of Orlando and became AirTran Airlines. ValuJet grounded itself in June 1996, after two accidents -- including the May 11, 1996, crash of Flight 592 in the Florida Everglades that killed 110 people.
