ATLANTA - BellSouth Corporation said Friday it had exceeded its 2001 goal of reaching 600,000 customers for its high-speed DSL Internet service and that it will nearly double the number of subscribers by year's end.
The regional telecommunications giant finished 2001 with 620,500 digital subscriber line customers, about 20-thousand more than BellSouth's forecast.
In a conference call with analysts, BellSouth's president of broadband and Internet services, Ralph de la Vega, said the company plans to have 1.1 million DSL customers by December 31st.
The company added 405,500 DSL subscribers last year, with more than 157,000 in the fourth quarter. Company spokesman David Blumenthal said the year-end surge was spurred by promotional offers and aggressive marketing aimed at switching cable modem users to DSL.
The company's DSL service is available to 70 percent of residents in its nine-state region. Atlanta-based BellSouth plans to have DSL accessible in 76 percent of the region by November.
