Lasseter hires new attorney

GAINESVILLE - Michael Shane Lasseter, the Gainesville man accused of shutting down Hartsfield airport in Atlanta two months ago, has hired a new attorney.

Meanwhile, the Clayton County solicitor filed five misdemeanor charges against Lasseter yesterday (Thursday).

Keith Martin noted that any jail sentence would depend on his recommendation and a judge's decision.

Martin charged Lasseter with five misdemeanor reckless conduct and trespass charges.

An arraignment date for Lasseter has been set for February first.

As he prepares to defend himself, Lasseter has hired well-known Athens defense attorney Ed Tolley of Athens to replace Robert Lipman of Atlanta, who tried to set a more conciliatory tone.

Neither Lasseter nor Tolley would comment on the Clayton charges.

Thursday, Lasseter met the FAA's deadline to request an informal hearing on the $3,300 fine the FAA is proposing for him.

Tolley said "hopefully we can work out something with the Federal Aviation Administration that satisfies everybody."
