GMS holds "program of choice" hearing

By By Tami Williams
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville City Schools held the first public hearing on the programs of choice options for Gainesville Middle School Tuesday.

In a standing room only forum, parents, faculty and students voiced their opinions on the programs of choice that will be offered for the 2002-2003 school year. Most parents are excited about the changes, but some parents still have some concerns.

Parent Tracey Addlesburger says, "when you choose one thing, you are loosing something else and I agree with that. We are giving up something to get something else." Addlesburger believes there are some kinks that need to be worked out, but the changes will be good for the middle school.

As a parent and former teacher, Janice Ludwig is excited about the new programs GMS will be implementing next year. "When the teachers have that creative freedom to develop the curriculum and expand it, they get excited." Ludwig says, "That just brings momentum to the class."

Three options will be available for students including humanities, classical studies and Earth Quest programs. Parents and students will choose their desired programs by March 29.

Gainesville Middle School faculty and administrators are encouraging that parents and students visit their school counselors to help decide what program they will choose.
