CUMMING - To mark the 15th anniversery of a civil rights march in Forsyth County, which turned violent when counter-protesters attacked, up to 200 marchers are expected in Cumming Saturday.
In 1987, civil rights activist Hosea Williams and about 50 followers marched on Cumming to mark Martin Luther King Junior's birthday and to protest alleged racial inequality in Forsyth County.
They were met with by a group of counter-protesters numbering about 300 who showererd them with rocks and bottles.
Unable to complete the march, Williams returned the following week with 20,000 protestors, protected by scores of law enforcment officers and the National Guard, and with the national media in tow.
This weekend's commemorative march will begin at 11:00 a.m. Saturday and will follow the route of the original march along Bethelview Road.
