Sugar Hill man struck and killed by thieves was Christmas shopping with wife

By B.J. Williams

A Sugar Hill man has been identified as the victim in a Saturday night hit-and-run incident in the parking lot of a Suwanee Walmart store.

Lt. Robert Thompson identified the victim on Monday as Christian Gutierrez, 42. He said Gutierrez was in the parking lot of the store on 3245 Lawrenceville Suwanee Road when he was struck by a U Haul van and dragged across the parking lot.

"His wife was with him and witnessed it," Thompson said. "She had said that they were there Christmas shopping."

Officers with the Suwanee Police Department were called to the store just after 9 p.m. Saturday and found Gutierrez dead at the scene. He was struck as two shoplifting suspects, being chased by store employees, jumped into a U-Haul and sped through the parking lot.

"That's when they struck the pedestrian and dragged him about 100 yards through the parking lot," Thompson said.

The suspects are described as black males. At this point, detectives do not have their names, although witnesses were able to give them the tag number from the U-Haul.

Thompson said police are asking anyone who might have information to call Detective Belcher at 770-945-8995. Anyone who wishes to leave an anonymous tip should call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS (8477).
