Northeast Georgia communities receive loans for infrastructure projects

By Hamilton Keener Anchor / Reporter

Three northeast Georgia communities were awarded funding from the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority board of directors for water, wastewater, sewer and stormwater projects.

Amanda DeVore with GEFA said Hoschton, Braselton and Hiawasee were awarded a total of $17,018,900 in funds.

The City of Hoschton will use a $10,000,000 Georgia Fund loan to expand the Hoschton Wastewater Treatment Facility, including the installation of a force main and the relocation of the discharge point to Indian Creek.

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division required the city to move the treated effluent to a larger body of water.

The city will pay an interest rate of 3.49% on the 20-year loan and is eligible for up to $1,000,000 in principal forgiveness.

The project will provide reliable treatment and effluent quality for population growth.

The Town of Braselton will use a $6,963,900 Georgia Fund loan to construct a storage tank, develop two groundwater wells and install high-service pumps and a water main.

The town will pay a 2.49% interest rate on the 20-year loan, which qualifies for a reduced rate due to Braselton’s designation as a WaterFirst Community. The town is also eligible for up to $696,390 in principal forgiveness.

The project will support anticipated commercial and residential growth in the area.

The Town of Hiawassee will use a $55,000 Drinking Water State Revolving Fund Lead Service Line Loan to conduct an inventory of lead service lines within its water system.

Hiawasee is eligible for principal forgiveness up to $55,000.
