A pursuit of an allegedly stolen vehicle led to a chase through Hall County that reportedly left another driver dead Wednesday afternoon.
Gainesville Police Department officials confirmed Thursday morning that they received reports late Wednesday afternoon of a pickup truck being stolen from the Hardy Chevrolet dealership on Browns Bridge Road. The male suspect in the case allegedly entered the dealership and appeared interested in buying a vehicle. When he was allowed inside one of the trucks, he allegedly drove away with it.
A report from the Georgia State Patrol indicated that they later saw a blue Chevrolet Silverado matching the description of the stolen truck on Shallowford Road just before 5:50 p.m. Troopers attempted to pull the truck over, but the driver sped away.
"A pursuit ensued through several city streets," the report from the state patrol said.
Troopers reportedly tried to use a PIT maneuver on the truck on Queen City Parkway just south of Jesse Jewel Parkway, but it was unsuccessful. They tried again, unsuccessfully, to PIT the truck on Queen City Parkway near Aviation Boulevard.
The truck continued fleeing southbound on Ga. 60, where it reportedly caused a fatal accident.
"The fleeing vehicle struck another vehicle from the rear," the state patrol's report said. "The impact forced the second vehicle off the roadway, where it struck several trees. The driver of that vehicle later succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash."
The person killed in that accident has not been publicly identified as of Thursday morning.
The truck continued fleeing south of Ga. 60 when a third PIT maneuver was tried by troopers, causing the truck to run off the roadway. The driver, however, regained control of the vehicle and continued fleeing, going east on Ga. 332 in the Belmont area of southeast Hall County.
"The suspect again left the roadway. As the driver attempted to reenter the road, Troopers executed a successful PIT maneuver, causing the vehicle to strike a power pole," the report from the state patrol said.
The suspect then allegedly fled on foot, leading troopers to use a taser to stop and arrest him. The suspect's name has not been released as of Thursday morning.
The incident left Ga. 332 shut down for several hours Wednesday evening.
