By Will Daughtry News Reporter

A cat near Buford Dam in Forsyth County has tested positive for rabies according to officials.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) reported the positive test on Tuesday.

Public health officials will notify anyone who has been exposed and will inform them if they need to seek medical care.

“We are encouraging residents to report any animals appearing to be sick in this area by contacting the Animal Services Division.” Animal Services Deputy Director Haley Brown said. “We encourage others to come forward if their animals are symptomatic and obtain current rabies vaccinations for your animals.”

The rabies virus can be transmitted from animals to humans only when the virus is introduced into bite wounds, open cuts in the skin, or in the eyes or mouth.

Rabies is a viral infection and enters the central nervous system of the host causing inflammation of the brain and is almost always fatal.

If you see a wild animal acting strangely, avoid contact and contact animal services at (770) 781-2138. If it is after hours, Forsyth County 9-1-1 Center’s number is (770) 781-3087.
