Days after Republican U.S. Rep. for Georgia’s 1st District Buddy Carter announced he would be running for the Senate seat currently held by Jon Ossoff, another name has been thrown into the ring.
Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Republican John King announced he would be running for the Senate seat in 2026 in the Republican primaries on Monday.
On Wednesday, WDUN’s “The Martha Zoller Show” was able to speak with King about his campaign.
“I’m a lawman and I’m a soldier, and that’s how I’ve approached manyu of the problems that I’ve had to face across my career,” King said.
King was born in Mexico and became the first Latino statewide elected official in the state. He mentioned his time as an Atlanta police officer and as major general in the Georgia National Guard.
“We still have some work to do, but I have a lot of confidence, especially with Governor Kemp and the leadership in our state,” King said.
He mentioned that President Donald Trump’s tax cuts he passed in his first term should be made permanent.
King also took a jab at Ossoff, calling him California’s third senator.
“In my opinion, California has at least three senators, one of them being a Georgia Senator, and we need to replace Mr. Jon Ossoff,” King said.
It is important to note Ossoff was born in Atlanta.
“While I was serving in Afghanistan, I was protected and kept alive by Afghans … they were begging me to help them get out and I called both Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock and asked them for help and neither one would even return my phone call,” King said.
King mentioned the growth of the Latino vote, and said he’d have to “earn that vote.”
“You got to show up to their communities, you can’t just expect them to come to you,” King said.
King added he is not a self-funder, but has gotten multiple small dollar donations in the last few days.
