Barrow Co. officer dies in off-duty accident

By Will Daughtry News Reporter

A Barrow County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) officer was killed in an off-duty accident on April 5 according to the department.

Officer Braydon Butler began his career at the sheriff’s office through the High School Explorers program at 14-years-old where he found a passion to serve others through law enforcement.

“It’s just tragic that at a young age that his life ended, but his family made a decision to donate a lot of his organs,” Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said. “I found out last night after doing so that he may affect over 100 people.”

Butler graduated from high school in Barrow County and was hired as a detention officer where he started the path to becoming a deputy sheriff.

“Our hearts are broken, but his memory will live on with well over 100 people,” Smith said.

Butler was four weeks away from graduating the Northeast Georgia Police Academy before he tragically passed away.

Sheriff Smith said they are trying to figure out how to posthumously make Butler a deputy sheriff.

“We have retired his number, DC-21,” Smith said.

Sheriff Smith also said he used to coach Butler in baseball, and called him “BB” for short.

“I’ve watched him from a young, young middle schooler … all the way through highschool,” Smith said. “It touches my heart strings as well to see that. We’re blessed to have known him this short time, and know that he’s looking over us now.”

The Butler family requested donations in loving memory of Braydon be made to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office Employee Fund.: https://donate.stripe.com/test_7sI4jc3lPdGSfsI7st
