Accounting students at Piedmont University will offer assistance with federal and state income tax preparations to community members at no cost.
The Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program will allow student volunteers to help residents in Habersham and Banks County with tax preparations after completing the IRS’ VITA training and Walker College of Business Professor Jay Long’s individual income tax course.
Long is collaborating with Susie Burton Medina, the local University of Georgia Extension Family and Consumer Sciences coordinator for the program.
“Last year’s VITA students were able to double the number of returns prepared for individuals in Habersham and Banks County, and we are excited for even more growth during the second year of the program,” said Long.
Appointments are available in Demorest, Clarkesville, and Homer by calling 706-677-6230 or 706-395-8069. If one of the seven upper-level accounting student volunteers is available, on-campus meetings will be held in the Swanson Center. Appointments will run through the tax filing deadline of April 15.
