A municipal police department in Gwinnett County has announced the death of one of its officers.
The Duluth Police Department issued a statement on social media Thursday afternoon, saying Master Patrol Officer Javier Bahamundi died unexpectedly Wednesday morning at his home. No cause of death was given in the release.
Bahamundi had been with the department for nearly 18 years, including as a patrol officer and a detective. He was also credited with starting a Spanish-speaking Citizens Police Academy.
"Officer Bahamundi was more than just a police officer—he was a mentor, a friend, and a pillar in our community," the Duluth Police Department said in Thursday's release. "We ask that you keep Officer Bahamundi’s family, friends, and his colleagues here at the Duluth Police Department in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. His loss leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his memory and impact will forever remain in our hearts."
