The City of Gainesville recently announced that Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport taxiways and runways will be closed for work on a taxiway overlay project.
Gainesville officials said the closures will begin on Monday, Sept. 23 with crews paving the parallel taxiway for runway 5/23 to include upgraded connectors.
Runways 5/23 and 11/29 will close for three days as crews work in the taxiway intersection.
“The project will span 31 days total and has runway closures due to the proximity of the equipment to the runway,” Airport Manager Lisa Poole said.
Over the next 14 days starting Thursday, Sept. 26 runway 11/29 will reopen while runway 5/23 will be closed.
For the last 14 days of the project starting Thursday, Oct. 10, both runways will be open and taxiways will be closed in necessary areas.
“This is a great and much-needed improvement to our field,” Poole said. “The City appreciates the public’s cooperation and understanding of what it takes to accomplish these projects.”
