Gainesville man arrested after assault, charged in alleged November murder

A Gainesville man who was arrested earlier this week on assault charges is now also being charged in the November 2024 murder of a man at an apartment complex in the city.

The Gainesville Police Department issued a statement Thursday morning saying that Logan Ryan Plumley, age 21, was arrested Wednesday. He was wanted on assault charges after an incident at the Longstreet Clinic Urgent Care on Jesse Jewel Parkway Monday.

"Some employees from the Longstreet Clinic were followed by (Plumley) and there was a confrontation there on that property between (Plumley) and some of their employees," Gainesville Police Chief Jay Parrish said.

During that confrontation, Plumley allegedly pulled a gun on the employees before fleeing once the employees spotted nearby firefighters and called for help. Eyewitnesses and security cameras were able to capture Plumley's vehicle description and tag number, leading to his arrest later in the week.

During the search for Plumley, Parrish said investigators were able to connect him to the November 2024 death of John Tracy Hill, age 64, a wheelchair-bound man who was found dead in the Walton Summit apartment complex on E.E. Butler Parkway. Plumley reportedly lived down the hall from Hill in the same complex.

Hill was found dead by police after a welfare check from "sharp force injuries." Parrish said the department has been working with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation since Hill's death to identify his killer.

"When (Plumley) led (detectives) back to the area of that homicide, simply to his residence, their senses were spiked and they paid close attention," Parrish said. "That caused a little bit of a delay, because we didn't want to rush. We wanted to make a solid case, so it required a few more search warrants, a few more interviews of other people to close the loop on this thing."

As of noon Thursday, Plumley remained in the Hall County Jail without bond on charges of felony murder, aggravated assault and simple assault. Gainesville Police say both cases remain under investigation.

Parrish said police have informed Hill's family that a suspect has been arrested in the case.

"I would doubt highly that anybody could ever say it's closure. You can't bring closure when your loved one, so defenseless, is tragically murdered, but certainly I hope we can bring just a little bit of peace of mind knowing that Plumley will not kill again on our streets," Parrish said.
