Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) contractors will open another lane on I-85 southbound on Saturday.
This follows the opening of the same segment of I-85 northbound to go along with an extra 1.5 mile segment this week.
The extra lane will be between mile markers 137 and 143.
Crews will put the finishing touches on the work, removing barriers and striping the road. Following this overnight work, the lane should be open weather permitting.
The 13-mile project is looking to widen I-85 from two to three lanes between US 129 and US 441. Construction is also replacing and widening four bridges in two locations.
This continues the work of Phases 1 and 2 of the project with the overarching goal of widening the interstate to the South Carolina state line.
The next phases will see crews finalize paving work on the remaining portion of I-85 and complete work on the new bridges.
Georgia DOT will provide updates via social media as the opening is weather dependent. Motorists are advised to drive cautiously through the work zone and obey the speed limits.
