Gas main leak in Gwinnett County closes travel lanes along Satellite Boulevard

By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter

A gas main leak is reported to be responsible for lane closures along a popular stretch of road in Gwinnett County on Wednesday.

Pubic safety workers and utiltiy groups spent the better part of 16 hours redirecting traffic away from northbound lanes of Satellite Boulevard, north of Beaver Ruin road due to a gas main leak in the area.

Gwinnett County Fire Lieutenant Jessica Joiner says in a statement that Atlanta Gas crews were travelling through the area of Satellite Boulevard at around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday when they detected an odor of gas.   Atlanta Gas and fire crews were on scene in that area for approximately 16 hours for fire suppression standby while repairs occurred.

The gas company found a 4–5-inch gas line that had been damaged and was leaking natural gas. Due to the gas line running under a water main, ATL Gas crews had to create a bypass for the gas line and dig under the road which had to be shut down and is still under construction, as of this report.

No evacuations were required, and the gas leak was quickly secured by crews on the scene, according to Lt. Joiner's statement.
