By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

A man wanted on a list of charges including murder was arrested this past week in Dawson County.

Dawson County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Matthew Blackstock said Jonathan Thoams Bates, age 44, was arrested Tuesday at The Crossings of Dawsonville apartment complex off of Dawson Forest Road near Ga. 400.

"On Monday afternoon, our warrants unit was notified by the U.S. Marshals Service that Bates may be staying at the apartments," Blackstock said. "The warrants unit immediately began surveillance in that area, and on Tuesday afternoon they actually located Bates walking towards the apartment complex, where deputies were able to make contact with him."

Blackstock said Bates was arrested without incident and has since been extradited to the Paulding County Jail where he remains without bond. A social media post by the Paulding County Sheriff's Office said a bench warrant was issued by a senior Superior Court judge against Bates for failure to appear in a trial on Monday.

Paulding County court records show that Bates is accused of assaulting Cynthia Bates, causing her death in May of 2017. He faces charges including malice murder, felony murder and both first-degree and third-degree cruelty to children.

Court records indicate Bates moved to the Dawson County apartment complex on April 5. Paulding County Sheriff Gary Gulledge said he was thankful for the Dawson County Sheriff's Office's assistance in the case.

“I am grateful for the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office and the interagency cooperation which quickly led to the arrest of Jonathan Bates," Gulledge said.
