A Northeast Georgia county gains nationally recognized distinction as a senior citizen-friendly community.
Habersham County has recently been designated as a member of AARP's Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities.
A release from the county's Public Relations Office says county commissioners were honored to receive the designation, following the submission for consideration from the Georgia Mountain Regional Commission.
in the release, Habersham Commissioner District 1 Bruce Palmer says, “It was an honor to receive AARP’s Age-Friendly States and Communities designation on behalf of Habersham County, I would also like to thank Georgia Mountain Regional Commission (GMRC) for submitting us for this recognition.”
The 12 counties represented by GMRC serve 21% of older adults (60 and older) and almost 500,000 Georgians.
This honor allows Habersham County to work with the AARP to become more livable and age-friendly by creating safer and more walkable streets, needed housing and transportation options, better access to key services, and opportunities for residents to participate in community activities.
