Clarkesville man arrested after brief chase, search

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

A Clarkesville man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after reportedly running from police, leading to a search.

The Habersham County Sheriff's Office said deputies spotted John Weston Welborn, age 45, near Railroad Street Apartments, in the area of J. Kennedy Road and Ga. 197. Welborn reportedly had an outstanding warrant for child support.

"The man immediately fled on foot, pursued by the deputy," a release from the sheriff's office said.

Welborn initially escaped, with authorities from the sheriff's office and several other nearby agencies setting up a perimeter and using tracking dogs and drones to eventually find and arrest Welborn 30 minutes later.

Welborn is now facing additional charges of obstructing or hindering law enforcement.
