OAKWOOD, Ga. – Lumpkin County scored the first 35 points of the game to comfortably take down Johnson Friday night, 64-14.
Nolan Matthews scored three of the first five touchdowns, the first coming on a 1-yard rush followed by a 34-yard catch from Cal Faulkner. To start the second quarter, he returned a punt for a touchdown that put the Indians up 28-0 at the time.
Trailing 35-0, Johnson's Montyrious Young burst into the open for 71 yards and a touchdown to get the Knights on the board, but Lumpkin responded with the next 29 points with rushing touchdowns by Caleb Wendl, Mason Melanson and Kolson Howell. Young scored again for the Knights in the fourth quarter and converted the two-point conversion.
Faulkner finished the night 9-for-10 passing for 161 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 17 yards and a score as well. Young had 158 rushing yards and two scores for the Knights.
Lumpkin County (4-2, 3-1 Region 6-3A) will play host to North Hall next week, while Johnson will travel to Pickens.
