A barn fire Sunday morning in northwest Forsyth County led to the deaths of 26 horses which were boarded at the location.
Forsyth County Fire Division Chief Jason Shivers said crews responded at about 6 a.m. to the fire on Old Preserve Trail. Arriving crews found a large barn that was fully involved in flames. Shivers said the agency believes the fire had been burning for quite some time before crews arrived.
The agency said they were not able to attack the fire from inside the structure due to the extent of the flames.
26 horses that were boarded inside the barn all died in the blaze, and the barn was declared a total loss.
"These horses have multiple owners that lease or rent space for boarding their animals," Shivers said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Shivers said the building was unsafe for investigators to enter as of Monday morning. The agency will work to coordinate with the property owner and associated insurance companies in the coming days.
No firefighters or civilians were injured.
"I've been at this for 25 years and it's by far the worst agrarian fire that I remember us having here," Shivers said.
A GoFundMe page was created Sunday to help the owners of the property, named Blue Springs Farm.
