CUMMING, Ga. — The damage from last week's severe weather outbreak across Northeast Georgia has forced the North Forsyth football team to move two home games to East Forsyth's Bronco Stadium.
Forsyth County Schools communications director Jennifer Caracciolo released a statement on Wednesday.
"We are saddened to share that significant high winds on Thursday, July 20, severely damaged the football stadium scoreboard at North Forsyth High School (NFHS)," the statement said. "On Friday, Forsyth County Schools’ Facilities Department discovered glass from the scoreboard embedded in all sections of the field. The Shaw Sports Turf division visited the field on Monday to review the situation. Since neither the school district nor Shaw can guarantee that 100% of the small, wide-spread pieces of glass can be removed, the field has been deemed unsafe for students. A plan to remove and install new turf has been created, with the goal of the field being ready for the school’s homecoming game on September 15."
The Raiders will play Forsyth Central on August 25 and Creekview on September 8 at East Forsyth. North Forsyth opens the season on August 17 against Archer at West Forsyth in the Corky Kell Classic.
"We're already playing in the Corky Kell Classic at West Forsyth [August 17]," Forsyth County Schools athletic director Nathan Turner said. "Right now, we have a contingency plan for all [football] games [at North Forsyth] but would like to be back in Raider Stadium by mid-September.
"Shaw Carpets of Dalton has been unbelievable. They've worked with us from Day 1. We'd also like to thank East Forsyth principal Kasey Martin and athletic director Matt Hollis along with all the other schools that are going to help out with moving ball games and shuffling schedules."
Turner also said there is damage to the softball and baseball fields at North Forsyth, the softball field fencing at West Forsyth, and fencing around the East Forsyth football and baseball fields.
