Cleveland man facing DUI charge after fleeing from Habersham County deputy

A man from Cleveland was arrested Tuesday afternoon for driving under the influence after fleeing from a Habersham County Sheriff's Deputy on Highway 115.

According to a press release from the Habersham County Sheriff's Office, a deputy was patrolling Highway 115 just after 5:30 p.m. when he saw a Chevrolet S10 without a license plate. The truck sped away at a high speed before the deputy could activate his emergency equipment to conduct a traffic stop.

The truck traveled up Highway 105, making a series of other turns before making its way onto Yearwood Road. The truck traveled up an embankment on Yearwood Road, striking a tree with its passenger side. The deputy used his vehicle to prevent the driver, Joseph Dale McCallister, 48, from opening his door and fleeing on foot.

The Georgia State Patrol charged McCallister with driving under the influence. The Habersham County Sheriff's Office charged McCallister with fleeing and attempting to elude, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug-related objects, failure to obey stop sign, failure to maintain insurance, failure to maintain lane, no registration, driving on wrong side of the road and driving within a gore.

McCallister was taken to the Habersham County Detention Center following the chase and wreck.
