Banks, White counties latest to report officer impersonation scams

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

The trend of scammers impersonating local law enforcement is continuing in Northeast Georgia with two more agencies reporting the scams this week.

The White County Sheriff's Office and the Banks County Sheriff's Office made social media posts Thursday and Friday, respectively, saying they've received reports from citizens of callers claiming to be with their agencies and requesting money. The scammers' methods, however, do differ based on the sheriff's offices' reports.

Banks County authorities say the scammers' approach there has been similar to what's been reported in other counties in recent years, with the caller claiming to be with the sheriff's office, announcing a warrant against the victim and demanding payment.

White County officials, however, say callers there have been posing as officers and asking for money to donate to Camp Lejeune, a U.S. Marine Corps base in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

In both cases, authorities say the calls are false. They advise that law enforcement officers will never call asking for or demanding money and they say anyone who receives such a call should hang up and contact the department directly if they have concerns.
