Gwinnett County townhome fire displaces 37 residents

No one was injured Wednesday after a fire at Peachtree Corners in Gwinnett County left 37 townhome residents displaced.

At approximately 11:36 a.m. firefighters responded to reports of a townhome fire on 6520 Hillandale Drive NW in Peachtree Corners. Plumbers working on-site had contacted the leasing office and indicated a fire broke out in one of the units, according to county officials. The leasing office then called 911.

Once crews were on-scene, they found a fire tearing through a two-story multi-family townhome slab. Heavy flames and smoke were emitting from the center of the structure, which collectively housed eight different townhome units. Multiple hose lines were promptly deployed and a ladder truck was erected for ariel operations, according to Lieutenant Andy Lane with the department.

“There was smoke and fire damage to the bulk of the apartment and water and smoke damage to the remainder,” Lane said. “So I believe four in total were affected by the fire itself and the rest of them were affected by smoke and water damage.”

Crews gained access to the attic of the townhomes and deployed rescue ladders in the windows in case victims were found inside. One dog was rescued from the blaze and reunited with it’s owner, officials said. The flames were brought under control at 12:36 p.m. No one was found inside the structure and there were no reported injuries.

37 residents in total were displaced. The building leasing office is currently working with the American Red Cross for assistance in relocating the impacted families while repairs take place.

County officials report the cause of the fire was accidental and related to plumbing work being done in one of the units.
