Gwinnett Tax Commissioner Denise Mitchell sworn in for first elected term

Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner Denise R. Mitchell was sworn into office for her first elected term Monday by Gwinnett County Probate Judge Christopher A. Ballar at the Gwinnett Justice and Administrative Center in Lawrenceville. 

Mitchell won the Nov. 5 election after receiving over 240,000 votes. 

According to a release from the Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner’s Office, Mitchell brings 26 years of experience working in the office. She began  working with the GCTC as an accounting supervisor, then later became director of finance and accounting. 

In 2021, she was appointed the county’s chief deputy tax commissioner and began serving as tax commissioner in May 2022.

Mitchell earned a bachelor’s degree in hotel and restaurant management from Georgia State University and a master’s degree in public administration from DeVry University’s Keller Graduate School of Management. She also earned Certified Local Government Manager and Certified Finance Officer designations from the University of Georgia.

 Additionally, Mitchell  serves as an advisory board member for the Georgia Department of Revenue and as vice chair for the Tax Commissioners’ Technology Development Council of Georgia, known as TC Tech.

She will serve a four-year term.
