It was a rough night for Northeast Georgia-area boys soccer teams on Wednesday in the opening round of the Georgia High School Association playoffs.
Just two teams moved through to the second round of the playoffs of their respective classifications.
Class 3A No. 10 West Hall hammered Franklin County, 10-1, to advance to the second round. The Spartans (7-7-1) next will travel to No. 2 Coahulla Creek, who routed Carver-Atlanta 10-0 on Wednesday, in the second round.
In Class 5A, Region 8-5A champion Flowery Branch won its first playoff game since 2021 with a 2-0 win over Cartersville at home in Class 5A. The Falcons (10-5-3) scored a goal in each half. They will play host to Region 6-5A third seed Cambridge, who knocked off No. 6 Villa Rica 2-1 on Wednesday, in the second round next week.
However, Jefferson fell to No. 2-ranked Dalton, 4-0, on the road to be eliminated in Class 5A. Buford fell to Norcross in Class 7A, 4-0, on the road to be knocked out of the playoffs.
Rabun County lost to No. 4-ranked Dalton Academy, 7-1, in the first round of Class A Division 1 while Towns County also dropped a road match to Mt. Zion-Carroll, 6-1, in Class A Division 2.
In the Class 3A girls playoffs, seventh-ranked White County went on the road and took down No. 6 Hebron Christian, 1-0, to put three Region 7-3A teams in into the second round.
