By Austin Eller News Director

A Gastonia, North Carolina man was arrested in Hall County Wednesday on drug trafficking charges after authorities allegedly found $77,000 worth of methamphetamine in his possession during a traffic stop in the Braselton area.

B.J. Williams, public information officer with the Hall County Sheriff's Office, said deputies conducted a traffic stop just before 4 p.m. near the intersection of Old Winder Highway and Friendship Road in Braselton. The traffic stop was conducted on a pickup truck with a tag belonging to a different vehicle with no insurance.

The driver of the truck was identified as John Ray Campbell, 50.

Deputies observed open beer containers in plain view in the vehicle, leading them to suspect Campbell might be driving under the influence. The Georgia State Patrol arrived at the scene to assist with the investigation and conducted a field sobriety test on Campbell, resulting in a DUI charge.

A deputy found a backpack in the bed of the truck during a search of the vehicle, in which they found more than 1,000 grams of methamphetamine.

Campbell was being held at the Hall County Jail without bond as of Friday afternoon.
