The Hall County Sheriff's Office arrested an Oakwood man early Saturday morning on a list of charges after allegedly leading authorities on a chase on Interstate 985.

According to a press release from the Hall County Sheriff's Office, Rashid Kyler Imes, 23, remained in the Hall County Jail as of Tuesday morning.

A Hall County Sheriff's Deputy reportedly found Imes at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday asleep in a car stopped at the intersection of Lanier Islands Parkway and the I-985 northbound ramp. The deputy positioned his patrol vehicle in front of the stopped car and then went to the car to contact Imes. A second deputy then arrived for backup and parked his patrol vehicle on the opposite front side of Imes' vehicle.

Imes woke up when the deputy spoke to him, but he then allegedly drove forward, striking the second deputy's vehicle. Imes then put his vehicle in reverse and accelerated backward down the off-ramp. He made his way to the highway and turned to proceed northbound on I-985.

The deputy pursued Imes for a short distance as he believed Imes was under the influence. The deputy then turned the pursuit over to a third deputy who was on patrol north of exit 8. The pursuit continued from Exit 8 to Exit 14, where Imes crashed his vehicle.

Imes then got out of his vehicle and fled from the scene. A Hall County Sheriff's Office K9 helped locate Imes a short distance from the scene of the crash.

He was transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Hall County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer B.J. Williams said investigators believe Imes was injured after he jumped down an embankment and fell and landed on his face after leaving his vehicle.

Deputies searched Imes and his vehicle and found a quantity of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a loaded handgun.

He faces the following charges:

  • Felony possession of marijuana
  • Possession and use of drug-related objects
  • Possession of marijuana with intent to distribute
  • DUI-drugs less safe
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime
  • Fleeing/attempting to elude a police officer for felony arrest
  • Obstruction-resisting officer/arrest
  • 10 traffic offenses, including reckless driving, speeding and obstruction of an intersection.

The Georgia State Patrol also assisted in the investigation.
