The City of Suwanee announced a new community project Thursday to build a new playground at PlayTown Suwanee located off Main Street.
"After 20 years of fun, PlayTown has reached the end of its planned service life," Suwanee City Manager Marty Allen said.
PlayTown Suwanee was built in 2004. According to Suwanee officials, more than a thousand community members joined forces to help build the structure and it is time for the city to do it again.
"We explored rehabbing it, but ultimately, it made even more sense to rebuild it with modern, durable materials and incorporate some new features," Allen said.
Leather & Associates designed and managed the original playground at Playtown. The city has approved the company to return for its new upgrade.
The new playground will remain in the same location, maintain a similar size and include existing elements of the original build, officials said; However, the new design will meet modern standards for inclusivity and will be built with earth-friendly, recycled materials. According to the city, these new materials will be long-lasting and nearly maintenance-free. The new playground will be designed to reflect Suwanee and include special features unique to the area.
"With the construction of Town Center on Main, this seemed like the perfect time to give our beloved PlayTown a much-needed facelift, while also providing a new generation of parents the opportunity to be involved in a truly impactful project," Allen said.
The collaborative build will offer a hands-on opportunity for citizens to give back to the community. The City of Suwanee and Leather & Associates will also host design brainstorming sessions with whom they deem as playground experts - children.
The City of Suwanee plans to make an upcoming announcement for community input design and volunteer opportunities. The project is expected to begin in the fall.
