Forsyth County Schools Superintendent Jeff Bearden announced at a County Board of Education meeting Tuesday evening that he will retire from his position in November 2024.
Bearden has served as superintendent of the school system since September 2014. He was previously superintendent of Rome City Schools and Fayette County Schools.
"This year marks my 34th year in public education, my 19th as a superintendent. It's been a wonderful journey," Bearden said. "From tiny little Limestone, Maine, serving 330 students on the Canadian border, to serving more than 55,000 students in one of our state's and nation's largest and most successful school systems. I've had several stops along this journey, and without question, this has been my absolute favorite."
Bearden said Tuesday evening he will pledge to continue working "just as faithfully and just as hard" until his retirement on Nov. 1, 2024.
"We are so fortunate to live and work in a community that values public education, and provides lots of resources and support for kids," Bearden said. "No doubt that will continue."
Bearden said he made the announcement Tuesday to give the Board of Education the time to search for his replacement.
“We are forever grateful for Jeff’s steadfast vision, relationship-focused leadership, and heartfelt commitment to our students, staff, and community," Board of Education Chairperson Darla Light said. "We look forward to continuing to work with Jeff in 2024 as we transition to the next chapter for Forsyth County Schools. We will share more information in the new year.”
