GBI releases name of suspect in Hall County officer-involved shooting

By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is continuing to investigate an officer-involved shooting case from Hall County early Saturday that involved a 9-1-1 call for domestic violence.

The GBI says the Hall County Sheriff's Office received a 9-1-1 call to a domestic dispute just before 7:00 a.m. at a home along Samoa Way in Flowery Branch near McEver Road.  It is there that a female victim called for help after being assaulted and pushed down stairs by her husband, now identified as David James Umpmreyville, 57, of Flowery Branch.

Deputies were in a standoff for nearly two hours with the suspect at the home when SWAT teams were reportedly called in to assist.

The GBI says Umpmreyville reportedly came out of the home making threats while armed, before returning inside, and allegedly firing shots in the direction of Hall deputies through windows of the home.

A deputy reportedly returned fire at Umpmreyville, striking the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The GBI says an independent investigation is ongoing and once complete, the file will be given to the Hall County District Attorney’s Office for review.
