Gainesville woman arrested after child ingests THC

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

A Gainesville woman was arrested over the weekend after child she was caring for reportedly ingested THC leading to an overdose.

Gainesville Police Lt. Kevin Holbrook said Tuesday that police were called to an apartment complex on Eagle Eye Road Saturday to a report of the two-year-old overdosing.

"The two-year-old was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center where the child was then treated and released," Holbrook said. "As the investigation unfolded, it was determined that a caregiver of the child, Kristen Carrera, age 34 of Gainesville, had been in charge of the child."

Holbrook said the child came into contact with a THC vape, although he said it's unclear if the child ingested the vape or the oils. Carrera was arrested on charges of Reckless Conduct and Cruelty to Children in the second degree.

"We know that, from a law enforcement standpoint, there are many opinions and thoughts on THC and marijuana. So be it, we aren't here to debate that," Holbrook said. "The caregiver was responsible to protect and care for this child...it's their responsibility to ensure that children cannot access these types of items."

Carrera was booked into the Hall County Jail where she was released Monday on over $12,000 bond.
