Habersham County announced Thursday that former WDUN radio/AccessWDUN reporter Rob Moore will serve as the new public information officer.
A native of Habersham County, Moore has covered news in the county and surrounding areas for 30 years. He spent a decade with WDUN radio/AccessWDUN and throughout his career he has covered government meetings at all levels, court proceedings, public safety, crime incidents and community events.
Moore also formerly served as news director for other radio stations, such as WCHM in Clarkesville and WJRB and WJUL in Young Harris. Additionally he worked for 14 years at Community Newspapers Inc. with The Northeast Georgian newspaper and served as a staff writer, news editor and editor.
“I am excited to have Rob working for us,” Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell said in a press release. “He brings a wealth of knowledge from his time in the media world and will help Habersham County keep our citizens abreast of the goings on not only on the government side but also the public safety side of our county. I have known Rob since high school and look forward to working with him.”
Moore received his Public Information Officer certification from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
He also served as Habersham Emergency Management Agency’s volunteer public information officer and he worked at the Georgia Emergency Management Agency State Operations Center’s public information desk during Hurricane Mitch.
Moore has more experience in handling severe weather incidents. In the days before drones and unmanned aerial vehicles, he performed aerial damage photography for GEMA after the Hurricane Opal tornadoes, the deadly tornadoes that hit White and Hall Counties and other significant storms across north Georgia.
Moore was selected as Volunteer of the Year for the City of Cornelia and he has remained active in the Habersham Volunteers in Public Service for about 20 years. He holds the lieutenant rank and he has served as a public safety chaplain.
Some other committees and organizations that Moore has been involved with are: the Big Red Apple Festival Committee in Cornelia, the Habersham Bank Homecoming Steering Committee, Habersham County Relay for Life Steering Committee, the Mt. Airy Civic Association, the Chattahoochee Mountain Fair Committee and the Baldwin Events Committee.
He graduated from Piedmont College and Truett-McConnell College, which are now both established universities. Moore is a member of Providence Baptist Church of Batesville.
“I am so excited to welcome Rob Moore, our new Public Information Officer, to our Habersham County team,” County Manager Alicia Vaughn said in a press release. “Mr. Moore brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the public information area and has served as a trusted partner to our municipalities, local businesses, and other community stakeholders in his previous positions. We feel he will be a huge asset in helping the county meet its goals of being transparent, accessible, and communicating in a timely and consistent manner to our citizens.”
