Humane Society hosts urgent dog and cat adoption event

The Northeast Georgia Humane Society is hosting an urgent adoption event for cats and dogs with low or zero-cost adoption fees for the next two weekends.

The Humane Society of Northeast Georgia (HSNEGA) is announcing a “Clear the Shelter” event for the next two weekends: January 13-15 and January 20-22. According to a press release, all available dogs and cats will have a zero-dollar adoption fee, and the shelter will accept donations of any size throughout the event. It will be hosted at the HSNEGA Adoption Center at 845 West Ridge Road in Gainesville from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

The adoption event comes after a cold snap that blanketed most of North Georiga last month over the Christmas holiday weekend. The shelter had over 65 pipes burst during the freeze, and officials report the building remains extremely damaged.

“Our goal as an organization is to maintain the highest level of care for our animals,” Allison Mayfield, HSNEGA’s CEO, said. “We recently experienced pretty devastating damage to our building and need to clear our shelter completely so we can reduce the number of animals in our facility and ensure that that standard of care is not compromised for their well-being,”

During the December cold front, the shelter was able to successfully place a majority of their animals with temporary foster homes while repairs began. As repairs have continued, accommodations have been made for the animals still remaining inside. Due to the difficult conditions reported inside the shelter, HSNEGA is sending out an SOS to the surrounding community in hopes that each animal can find a home.

“Being in a shelter environment can be stressful for our rescues,” Mayfield said. “The health and well-being of the animals in our care, as well as our team and the community we serve, remain our top priority. We will continue to be dedicated to meeting the needs of homeless rescues with a quality of care that they deserve.”

Potential adopters can view all available animals by visiting the shelter website.
