The Gwinnett County School District on Tuesday held its annual new teacher orientation, where they welcomed teachers who were either recently hired or hired during the previous school year.
A press release from the Gwinnett County Public Schools said teachers heard from a variety of speakers during the half-day event at the Gas South Convention Center.
Specifically, the new hires heard from Superintendent Calvin J. Watts, 2022 GCPS Teacher of the Year Jamie Garcia Caycho and Peyton Jesse, a student at Dacula High School. The keynote speaker for the event was John Antonetti, who works with schools and districts throughout North America on student engagement, writing, rigor and high-yield best practices.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the first day of the orientation focused on inspiring teachers as the country deals with a shortage of teachers.
During the second day of orientation on Wednesday, teachers reported to one of two local high schools where they spent a day taking part in grade-level and curriculum-specific assessment literacy. They also reviewed ways to foster a community for each student.
"These sessions are part of GCPS’ work to create a continual learning community that supports teachers, providing the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to be successful," the release said.
